Kaichou wa Maid-Sama is one of the most popular romance series and I remember it was toxic as fuck. I don't think it's only a women's thing this exists in romance targeted toward men too, like school days or Naruto or Mirai Nikki. people love toxic relationships with " I can fix her/him" because people like to feel great about themselves.

Payback (manhwa) is a good example of why people hate bottoms who have sex experience, they love "you are the first guy who..."
