My advice is just to take your time getting to know them. When I was younger I made it a task to know each members name as fast as possible and understand most of the inside jokes but now that I'm older I feel like I mostly just keep up with the group's activities when I feel like it. I had a crush on a person from my class because he was the smartest person and I remember he gave me a water bottle I think when I felt sick.
