First, slavery in many fantasies is wackadoodle, IM LOOKING STRAIGHT AT YOU SHIELD HERO, and is a quick way to Stockholm syndrome their way into romance and etc.
I honestly have no clue why it's so common as a romance/companionship trope, but good/better fantasies use it as A. The or one of the main problems that the characters want to solve or B.......
