I'll spare myself a lengthy answer and just say: I'm German. We learn about Germany's history extensively in school. We see the signs. It's fucking devastating. But I still have hope that we'll be able to fight the fascism without a war this time. Not entirely sure how, but I just have to hope.   1 reply

The other answers are great and I have something to add: there's an inherent conflict to the story when the love interest is an asshole. Stories are driven by conflict and people may view stories with only good main characters as boring or something.
