Yes, there are a lot of them with ridiculous plots that are nothing close to real life, and with characters I don't like, but there are some with great depth and heart and humor. I've been married for 24 years, together for a total of 28. Met him when I was 20, he was 18. In the U.S. it definitely depends on the state. Along the coastal states, like Washington, Oregon, and California in the West, and New York and such in the East, it's much more accepting, but of course there are exceptions depending on the city/town within that state.
