There are some scientific biological explanations if you google it, in particular the fact pain can induce release of endorphins. Also not all subs are masochists, so not all subs enjoy physical pain. I think a lot in the enjoyment comes from the emotional aspect of it. I don't listen to music while reading, but I do listen to it if I'm excercising, drawing, playing videogames or doing house chores, or any physical activity. But not while reading bc I can't concentrate and would probably either start dancing/singing or space out. Yes, sometimes I also get panic attacks, which is weird since I'm almost always alone so I should be used to it by now. I use a lot of background noises to help with that because it makes me feel like I'm not actually alone or it keeps my mind busy, like watching a video, a movie, listening to music or something when I can.
