Ash's obviously. Even if you were spoiled beforehand (like I was), or just noticed Lao following him, you kind of forget about all of that and get caught up in the happy moment--that Ash was finally going to leave the US to live with Eiji. But it all falls apart when Lao stabs him, and you realize that it they were never going to get their happy ending. T_T Don't get me wrong, I sobbed when Shorter died, but you know a death hits you hard when you can't even think about it without crying. ╥﹏╥
Shorter's was tragic because he was willing to give up his life to protect Eiji but in the end his mind betrayed him and caused him to almost kill the one he wanted to protect the most. On the other hand, Ash's was traffic because we had gone all that way with hope that perhaps Eiji and Ash would eventually be able to live together. And because Ash has finally found someone.that made his life worth living. Oh, and.not to mention that we were all prepared to re Ash read the latter and then join Eiji in Japan. But..no! He is to go and get killed by a character that we had mostly forgotten about. So, I'd say that it's pretty even.
