The best thing that we could do for a depressed person is to be always there for them, whenever they need. You don't need to make them smile or cry. Don't force them to do happy things or unhappy things. Since we actually don't know what that depressed person might be going through. Make sure you are always going to be their side no matter what. If you don't understand, don't lend sympathy because that's worse than saying nothing. Get him a therapist, someone is supposed to nudge him in the right direction so he discovers how to climb out of the hole himself, no one can get anyone out of depression, the person has to do the work themselves.
