Anime moms

I've been watching anime for some time now and it always kept bugging me how moms are always in the kitchen or doing some sort of chores while the rest of the family members are eating. This also only happens when it's a Japanese family but when they're westerns the mother is actually sitting on the table with them e.g Vinland saga or when Rin (free!) was with his foster family in Australia. Is it actually real? Do Japanese moms not eat with their family??
