I wish I was white
When you think of Asia, you would normally think of the big three: Korea, Japan, and China.
Unfortunately, I was born into neither of these. Instead of the Asian ethnicity people glorify, I was born as a South-east Asian.
I know the title is beyond crazy and insane to even think about, but I feel like most Asians like me, who is in America or the UK or anywhere else, do come across this crisis of wishing to be white.
I went to a school that was more white privileged. I was shamed for my food, my clothing style, why I’m flat on my chest and ass, and why I grow hair on my arms, face, etc.
All these reasons made me go in a crisis of hating my own culture and wishing I was white. I just wanted to fit in.
I did cut all of these people off once I graduated, and came into peace of what my ethnicity is, that I can’t control it, but as I scroll through social media, I get jealous that so much culture in Russia, Italy, France, etc is so unique and mine is just stupid.
For example: Opera and ballet were created in Italy. (Like why cant I have that in my country what)

I am European and discovering and immersing myself in new cultures is one of my passion. I went on my first trip in south east Asia 2 months ago, to Malaysia, and one of the main reasons I chose this destination was because I didn't hear much about this country before and I wanted to discover its culture. Because I know that just because a country is less talked about doesn't mean that they are less interesting. And the reason why we hear more about western cultures is because of cultural hegemony and soft power and not because other countries don't have their own unique value.
I stayed one month in Malaysia because I wanted to immerse myself in the culture and make local friends and not just speedrun touristic places without much understanding. I really loved this experience and want to continue visiting other south east countries. I consume a lot of travelling contents and can tell you that videos show me a really bright side of south east Asian cultures and history. I see what all of these countries bring, their own uniques dances, food, practices, songs, architectures... A lot of things that exist in the West have their own counterparts in South East Asia. And not all of cultural stuffs that exist in SE Asia exist in the West either.
I appreciate you!
Makes me sad when I see ppl who feel like this. SEA is full of so many beautiful cultures. There might not be opera or ballet, but SEA has so many countries with rich histories in dance and song that are unique to them; and those are just one small part of what makes these countries amazing. There's still the amazing food, the clothing, the landmarks, the traditions. SEA countries do not pale at all in comparison to European ones.
As a south Asian I feel you man like whenever I tell someone I’m Asian they always “correct” me and say “actually your not Asian babe your Indian
SEA is full of culture idk what you're on about
I don’t think I will ever be able to fully understand why some of you would ever wanna be a white person especially a European but all I have to say is be proud of your culture and your heritage! Especially if you’re from Southeast Asia it’s so diverse and you guys have such beautiful culture and cuisine like why would you wanna be a flavorless basic white person?
you cant change it, so just accept it
this is so real but love urself gng
yeah if you’re gonna hate yourself over your ethnicity you’re going to have a miserable life. also if you want to be happy you have to ignore the opinions of miserable people. it’s so pathetic to see this.
