You could have remnants of an ancient civilization (worn down buildings, written stuff, skeletons (humanoid or otherwise)).
If that's not possible/enticing, you could have a tidal sand ocean, where over the course of a rotation, the sand rises and falls, perhaps making some areas unaccessible at times.
Maybe even the planet doesn't rotate, so one ......
