to the emos of mgg
the story i plan to write has an emo as one of the main characters (not a serious book, just quotev stuff). Now i know i could just google but id really not rather be fed fake content/buzzfeed bs so I just want to ask/know the basic information of emo.
I know its a subgenre of punk (??) But im not sure still what the difference is (someone said punk is pent up anger and emo is pent up feelings but tbh i cant differentiate the music, i just dont have the ear for it). Can you be emo without wearing the outfits or should you also have the style aside from the music taste? What makes someone emo aside from the fashion and favorite genre of songs? Speaking of outfits, what are the clothing/accessories emos wear (and what are the differences between emo, goth, punk, etc)
Do they attend raves, and where? What are normally attributed to the subculture that are true and false?
I apologize for the barage of questions as well as any idiotic or stupid questions i may have asked. Im just not well versed but i dont want to do a disservice to my characters or any emos out there and i dont want to misrepresent a group of people who are already criticized/outcasted by large amounts of people. If emo is a music subgenre, you have to listen to and like the music to be emo. The same goes for metal. You dont have to grow out your hair and stop showering to be a metalhead. If you listen to the music, you are a metalhead/or in this case emo.

if you like something and identify yourself as a fan, go ahead. you don't need to do certain things to be that thing. you can be emo if you love that genre of music without wearing clothes, attending stuff. categorizing ourselves in a box and feeling pressure to attain some standards take away our enjoyment of said things.
