They/them reffering to a single person isnt a new thing, and it is as you mentioned so much easier than always saying he or she. In my language many nouns (reffering to people and occupations) have both the masculine and feminine form (there is no neutral form). Its so annoying having to say students (masculine) and students (feminine) or teachers ......
