I'm not answering for myself, but answering from a second-hand perspective. One of my friends actually LEARNED a lot of her English because she read translated boys love manga so often. It was genuinely impressive. She also reads a lot of slash/fan fiction stuff and even writes her own fan fiction in English despite it not being her first language.......
