You say, you have mutual friends so meet him with them. Unless those mutuals are also only online....
If you have mutual IRL friends, get a bunch together and go eat something or see a movie or whatever. If he not ok with that - tell him to go pound sand...
If all of them are only online, don't meet any of them alone and keep it public...
