Y'all are cooking lately asking the cold hard questions I love it. Disclaimer I am a bi black woman (yes it is relevant) The argument that BL/Yaoi is not "real" and therefore has less merit to say west lgbt rep like say heartstopper (just an example) has always made me flinch. Not because I think BL is real life but because who are you or me or an......   3 reply

So I’m queer and I don’t see an issue with straight people reading or creating this content. But I had a super interesting conversation with a friend that is also queer that made some interesting points. They brought up that they really have no issue with people consuming it, but the big issue lies in the creation and entitlement of lgbtq co......   3 reply

As a genre, BL intially branched off from Shoujo manga, which has historically entangled itself with themes of gender, sexuality and identity. For the most part, BL is still largley marketed towards women though has always retained a prominent [queer] male readership. The idea of demographics is highly contested in anglo fandoms, with the main cr......   reply

If the manga isn't giving us the "I'm scared that my sincere love will disgust you so much, that we'd never speak again. I'd rather painfully bottle up my emotions than have you see me in a different light.", it's simply not narratively gay for me. Which, you know, not every story about a gay couple has to be about the fact that they're gay, but it......   1 reply

Hi! My only problem with your comment is that you think all BL manga/webtoons are all porn, and that is false, there are many BL manga and webtoons that don't focus on the sex. Yaoi BL has sex and Shounen Ai BL is mostly about the romance, I have even seen Yaoi manga where it doesn't just focus on the sex scenes. There are many BL where it's cute a......   2 reply

Honestly I totally get what you mean. I see some bl (the very unrealistic ones) like the firstly shades of greys and the twilights of this world. I completely get it sometimes bl doesn’t feel « gay » but I feel like that’s because that vibe is in a lot of mainstream bl. But the more you get away from the very famous ones the more you find r......   1 reply

Ok so here is my input. Bl (or specifically yaoi) is typically stories written in or from Korea/Japan. Both of those countries are still very conservative about gay people or LGBTQ+ ppl in general. So I think they try to use ABO as a cop out because in those countries, having two moms or dads isn’t very common. I have seen and read plenty of comi......   reply

Here's the thing (as someone who is not queer), heterosexual stories are extremely stereotyped and often directed towards a female audience with very 'normal' taste. That is to say that the characters, both the female character and the male, never stray far from the normal. That's why we often have terms like the Duke of North or shadow daddy, beca......   2 reply
