Bl plots

Does anyone else feel like a lot of the bls (especially manhwas) held up as having a "good plot" really just default to generic tropes from their genres? Like a certain zombie story having zones and a brilliant scientist uncovering a conspiracy, a certain psychological having a main character whose main motivation is an evil step mother, that sort of thing?

the issue with BL, is that if you write it for BL, then your plot is romance and adding anything else is supplementary. most authors don't want or need to focus on such things. it's like, if you grade fantasy based on world building, the standards are higher, but if you grade romance on world building, shove them into a high school and it's fine....... 2 reply

Yeah... I've been trying to get into Shutline cuz I've always heard how good it is but like... it's really mediocre maybe it gets better idk but I've read up to ch 18 but it was so???? Nothing???? YES! that's why I've been shifting my focus onto shounen ai where it's still in a bl genre but less fan service and more emotionally appealing story and sometimes has either a unique plot but simple settings or unique settings with simple plot or both plot and settings be either simple or unique with lovable characters.
