character vs plot, which is better?

well written character. people underestimate how a trashy unseasoned character can quite literally ruin even the best plots. it is the characters who make the story, not the story that makes the character. example: mushoku tensei. i heard the plot is nice but why would i even watch that show when i know the mc is trash?   reply

plot ill be so real because even if the characters are interesting, i can NEVER read smth boring even if it has good artstyles and stuff like if the plot doesn't captivate me then the ill drop it immediately   reply

depends on what you are reading. mystery is shit if there is a bad plot but good characters because then it becomes a drama... not a mystery. or even a thriller but not a mystery. fantasy requires a good background and world building - honestly character and main plot don't matter all that much, but they are bonuses. some stories are literally ju......   reply

well written characters. but we also can't undermine the significance of a good plot, i say that bc i'm reading a manga where the plot excels in every aspect the only flaw is the way the characters are written, the mc is esp pathetic imo. i really dislike him, regardless the only reason i'm reading it is cuz i wanna know how it all works and happen......   reply

I know you said we can't do both, but I do think technically good characters can help drive the plot more than vice-versa. Well-written and unique characters can often make any story enjoyable, even if the plot is simple. If the characters are too boring, basic, or lack any depth, I could probably care less if the plot was good or not.   reply

I personally like well written characters better, I barely give a fuck about a plot when the characters are shit tbh, I don't think much about it but it's also about the script that pulls me into the story.   reply
