Having a pet is a lot of work :/ So please choose an animal you KNOW you can keep up maintenance of. My first pet was a gerbil and it was a lot of work i didn't do so I often feel bad remembering poor muffins :(. but you're a lot older than I was then so I think you can get away with something a little more high maintenance. So just do your resear......   reply

A pet is a huge financial responsibility, almost like having another child. theres vet costs, grooming costs, food, and even insurance to consider. Please make sure you and your family is ready to take on a pet for the rest of their lives. I got my first puppy a year ago, and it was pretty tough at first. Potty training took about a month, and I......   1 reply

I know you said you like larger dog breeds, but for me a smart, little dog is the way to go since they make smaller messes and are easier to train. As a student, taking care of a large dog with a high play-drive could prove to be difficult if you don't have someone there to train them and keep them occupied during your school day. If you have the s......   reply

You might want to start by asking what kind of animals your family is least scared of. Try and figure out if they're just scared or if it's an actual phobia because even if they can work on their phobias they will probably never really be comfortable around that animal. See if they will be sort of okay with something you can keep in your room so ......   reply

As someone who has grown up around animals and currently have a cat. Reading the situation the best option would actually be getting a hamster in my opinion. This is because it's affordable, the cage is easy to clean, and you can keep it your room with no issues. While say a cat is much more expensive but really the main thing is cat's can't handle......   reply

I currently have five dogs, a cat, a bird, and two tanks of fish. Since you don't have previous experience with animals I would suggest an animal that doesn't need training (potty training, tricks, etc.). Therefore, I would suggest fish that are easy to maintain, such as some guppies or barbs, or a small rodent that is low maintenance.   reply

This is gonna sound lame but I’d recommend getting some(or a) betta fish as a first pet. Apart from monthly/Bi-monthly total water changes and 15-20% weekly/Bi-weekly water changes, they’re easy to care for. All you really need to do is feed them every day. You’ll need a 5 Gallon+ tank. Never put more than 1 Male in the same tank, because the......   reply
