It depends on what you read. For example, shounen ai BLs are totally fine and are acceptable for all ages. But when you get into the more hardcore stuff, 12 can be too young if the person doesn't have a mature mindset. Nowadays it's easier to tell or express an interest in yaoi, so you don't have much to worry about.
