In most stories, movies, books, and manhwas it’s seen as “hot” to have an attractive, toxic, and probably abusive male lead. It sells no matter what generation. Most BL is written by women for women ex. How the uke and seme are drawn big and buff seme who can “protect” the uke and small big-eyed uke who needs a dick to think. People are d......   reply

Kaichou wa Maid-Sama is one of the most popular romance series and I remember it was toxic as fuck. I don't think it's only a women's thing this exists in romance targeted toward men too, like school days or Naruto or Mirai Nikki. people love toxic relationships with " I can fix her/him" because people like to feel great about themselves.   reply

And look at the success rates, most of the time its the ones with complicated relationships that catches the audiences attention. I think it's not BL genre alone that glorifies toxic relationships, romance genre in general glorifies it. Why? Maybe because it sells? Most readers likes it, the angst, the dramas and how the characters manage to make their toxic relationship work. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭   reply

Definitely, though tbf there's straight stuff that does this too. A big problem I have with the romance genre as a whole is how it often pushes this idea that, with enough hard work, abusive actions can be forgiven and worked through like they're normal relationship bumps. It's meant to be an ultimate act of love and commitment if their "love" can ......   reply

Something I should clarify is that the only manga I read is 98% BL, with 1% being 'post-anime' and another 1% divided between 'mangas I read before I discovered BL' and 'Yuri with Smut'. I'm not saying BL genre is alone with toxic relationships. I expressed myself wrong.   reply

Its a really glorified thing in the romance genre itself. Well its known more in BL i guess especially with newer works that got popular like lowtide twilight, passion and such. People often brush aside the toxic traits of the characters OR they find it as a positive or attractive trait of them, seeing it as 'hot' and 'sexy' or they just dgaf yknow......   reply
