I've read a shit ton of bl, not as much as others but still more then average. I've come to realize that with bls, the ultimate purpose of the plot is to serve as a device to establish the relationship and dynamic between the ml and mc. In that sense, story itself in bl is a plot device. Some do have a comprehensive storyline, but they are usually still there to establish and explain the characters.
Well.. no story “needs” plots.. but most readers would like to read a good plot and interesting things.. otherwise it’s just pointless and no one would be interested. reply
