I reccomend just getting some cheap dk yarn and practice the basic stitches like double crochet, single crochet, treble crochet, half double crochet, magic ring, circle, and front/back post double crochet. If you can do those you can do anything. I recommend watching YouTube videos instead of working about from a book. And also it’s beneficial to invest in some ergonomic crochet hooks that a big round molded layer of rubber /Siliconz makes your hands hurt less. Those metal ones that are skinny suck.
