why is sl*very common in fantasy?
I only censored slavery because idk what bots moderate this godforsaken site (jk)
my running theories are
- author is racist (in A LOT of cases)
- white-knight/savior complex for the MC to “save” the slave
- a plot point for the MC to be a liberated slave, to “earn” their freedom- making it a “cool/tragic backstory”
- P*rn Σ(  ̄□ ̄||)
like- very rarely do series actually dismantle the system of slavery and when they do it’s like- a minor plot point? at least in my experience.
I need more *fantasy* authors to condemn slavery dawg- don’t go and buy a milf with animal ears.. don’t avoid an orc because of the status they were ASSIGNED how about you intercept a shipment of PEOPLE and start an underground railroad like the GOAT Harriet Tubman. if that’s “too hard” go use ur excalibur or whatever to abolish the trafficking syndicate or somethin fr. don’t just accept it?? OR- EVEN EASIER- DON’T INCLUDE IT?
I swear to god if y’all comment some shit like “it’s good for the economy” or “well historically-“ bruh we supposed to LEARN from history, not write weird fanfics about buying slaves.
(I hope to engage in discussions- not arguments but i should lower my standards/expectations)
You're so real for this actually
Most of the cases it is the white saviour trope where the MC is like "I kinda feel bad for slaves" or "I saved a single slave I'm not like everybody else" and then that's it. Like..... condemn it? Dismantle it? Abolish it? And the origins of the slaves is always they're darker skinned than the main characters, unciv......

Im a sarah j maas hater for life. That weird ass woman has written abt slavery and oppression in some form as a bad thing in her fantasy books but then proceeds to say that she was proud of her grandmother for being in the IDF and claiming that Israel was a "magical and welcoming place" in an interview. aka supporting the idf who are oppressing Pa......

My running theory is that author is shit at writing plot and wants an easy way to make the story more complex and give characters back stories... And they are racist

This is so true like if your gonna add sl☆very do something yk like destroying the very corrupt system NOT support it by buying yourself a "good looking thing who would do anything for me" Why tf is it so rare to find a story where the mc just doesn't buy themselves a sl☆ve. I just wanna see the mc destroy the very cruel system which is sl☆v......

Not every fantasy portrays them in a good light. I have read fantasies where it's human trafficking crime, war slave problem etc etc
if they are used as porn device, then don't expect morality or logic

I hate slavery in stuff so much. If it's NOT being used to educate others in documentaries or biographies, then it's just a sick way of pushing your weird power dynamic fetishes in stories that would be BETTER WITHOUT!

I'm acc going to make out with you for this bc it always bothers me.
It's especially jarring bc the enslaved peopls are written SOO 2 dimensionally.
More often than not, the slave is some darkskinned person who was taken from their homeland (like some one else mentioed) normally the 'uncivilised' forest or desert where everyone walks round with a ......
