So a while ago I finished this book called Date me, Bryson Keller. It's a YA gay romcom . This book is basically about Bryson Keller who is the most popular guy in school but has never dated anyone before. So his friends dare him to date the first person who asks him out on Monday morning for the whole week and he has to do this for at least 3 months. The protagonist Kai jokingly asks him out and he actually says yes. Anyway while this fake dating thing goes on they actually fall in love bla bla you get the gist. I liked it , it was cute and fun. So I went to Goodreads to leave a review but the amount of negativity there astonished me . Everyone was pissed at the author for stealing the idea from the author of seven days manga. Now I have read that manga but apart from the dating for a week thing I thought nothing else was similar so I was weirded out by the hate . Because here in manga and manhwa community this much similarity is not something uncommon and people usually don't blame the authors of copying others. The amount of hate really pissed me off to be honest. The people of Goodreads would have a heart attack if they ever try to read Isekai genre because of how similar all the mangas are

isnt fake dating trope very common ? no one can steal that idea and i doubt theyre that similar to get mad at the author
Fake dating for a week is a similar concept that I haven't seen anywhere else except these two fictions. It's still not enough to call it straight up plagiarized though
Never trust goodreads reviews literally. Read them for fun and jokes but to pick a book? Nah. I have seen them butcher many of my favorites and I'm glad I didn't read the reviews of those otherwise I wouldn't have ever picked my favorites up AND MISSED ONE THOSE GEMS
No but it really makes me wonder if we even read the same book
people on goodreads are a different kind of nitpicky. not all, but that's one of the reasoms I moved to storygraph.
Thanks for the suggestion

Nah on this i gonna side to goodread because apparently the author have come forward that it is his "critique" to the manga seven. Nah. Its like you tracing someone art work and change several shit just to make it better in your opinion and profit out of it.
Thats just shitty move. Couldn't he just say he is inspired but he goes as far as saying he want to westernized it #-.-)
Re-writing an author story isnt a critique he claim it to be it just plagiarism with huge ego
To make it clear I have no problem with taking inspiration or similar premise. Thing like that is inevitable.
but the author really expose himself by writing his post about "its not plagiarism its my criticism to the original story" bruh how is it even a critique when he didnt tell the reader what he is criticizing and while profiting out his critique too ?
Oh ? I thought he just admitted that his book was inspired by the manga. I didn't see anything else about this. Can you link your sources?
Do people not know half of the stuff is recycled!?!? How could they not!?!? Anyways I will read this book! Thanks for recommendation <3
I would suggest not because recycled and re-writing is definitely two different thing and the author is doing the latter he even said it himself too ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
"There were themes that I wanted to explore in a western setting and as an own voices writer. These were born from my own critique of the work (seven days) with respect to actual and realistic LGBT culture, people and issues"
You're welcome ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶
