I've done both ways, broke my hymen masturbating when I was 15 and when I was on birth control, Nuvaring, I developed a cervical ulcer that would bleed with rough masturbation and sex. I wouldn't say it's normal or common but it can happen and you'll be okay. :) If you're ever really worried about it don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about it!......
