Sexism in shoujo
Ever think about how a lot of shoujo is lowkey sexist?
Like the whole reason why i got into shoujo in the first place was because i disliked how a lot of shonen only had female characters there for 2 purposes.
1. For hot fan service
2. To like the MC
And the majority of the female characters didnt really have a purpose beyond that
But the more shoujo i read the more i see that it also has a problem with sexism but its just portrayed differently
Like a lot of the times every female character other than the MC again fits into 2 roles
1. Worships the ground the MC walks on because the MC is perfect so why wouldn’t she
2. Evil bitch who is jealous of the MC and wants to steal her man
I think 2 is the worst because of how much more common it is and how much worse the implications are. Weather its male characters doing worse than female characters and still being forgiven while their female counterparts get an overly cruel punishment. Or how readers are so quick to hate a female character over the smallest things but will forgive a male character who is just pure garbage.
Like i could go on but i feel like this is already too long so what do you guys think?
Thats the problem with most romance focused stories tbh I'm always dying a little more inside when I read about how awesome the MC is or how every female character besides the FL turn into jealousy evil antagonists with lots of bitch slapping
Every (hot) male character suddenly falls for the "plain" FL (the story mostly describes them as plain bu......

gosh I think those old fashioned shoujos. As if they think girls are that damn stupid, funny bc majority of shoujos are written by women.
Whenever it's a love triangle the FL will just get tossed around by two or a harem of handsome men then by the end couldn't make her decision like some stupid toddler.
That 'she's special' shit always cringe me t......

Man I hate when reincarnation manwha the villainess steal the FL’s place and the FL gets turned into the villain instead. And then the MF cold northern duke who killed his wife in the pass life is the ML but not the cheery bubbly best friend who’s always been there for them

Uhhhh.. this is the reason I don't read shoujo manhuas. But there's many shoujo mangas I read that got great storylines. And, shoujo manhwas got kdrama plots obviously but they have some interesting plots too.
And sadly, the FL characters gets sexualised cause that's what 'female' readers want and 'female' writers writes. You know how y/n plots wor......

That's why, to this day, Hana Yori Dango wins a lot of points from me. Unconventional MC, F4 being perfect setup for harem but 1 immediately hits the brakes coz he recognizes his friend is in love with her, the other two (Rui included) just weren't interested, and an ML with cha......

I would be interested in what you would like to see in shoujo?
As for your points on FL purpose in shoujo.
1. I haven’t read many where the MC is perfect. What they are (again, with those I have read) is perfect for her.
In fact, most MC I have read have been dark, or loners, battle weary, burdened by political machinations, with a tragic pa......

You’re right ! That said that’s mostly in isekai type of shoujo or stories that drags on for no reason. And I feel like lots of stories are moving beyond that thankfully. But that said it would be hypocritical to say that it does not kind of reflect reality.
Men, especially if they are handsome, get away with a lot if not everything. While wom......

I like shoujos but tbh it's annoying if the main charecter is like a 30 ish woman in a 5 year old body and everyone is like OMG she is so smart and cute. It feel ingenuine. Also I hate Mary Sue's. Everyone thinks they're perfect and are in love with them. But all they are doing is being cute and a damsel is distrees. They never have charecter devel......
