Thoughts on Modern Yaoi
Hello everyone!
I really would like to know what y’all think of the new yaoi mangas/manhwas that are coming out (even if I noticed the same problems in shoujos as well)…am I the only one disappointed? I started reading yaoi when I was a teenager…at first I didn’t mind the cliches and red flags, but now that I’m an adult I grew a bit tired of always seeing the same things. It’s even a bit sad that I don’t see that many changes since then and I strongly believe that this new generation deserves better!
I wouldn’t even mind if some stories deal with toxic relationships and things like rape or cheating if it was only done if the story requires them…the problem is that they are present in most yaoi mangas (even the sweetest ones) and these kinds of arguments are always romanticised.
I understand that yaoi is basically porn for straight women (same as shoujo), but is it really what we want? Everyone knows that even if it deals with men…the uke is the woman (sometimes he really is drawn as a woman with a very small dick) and the seme is the dominant man (with a freaking horse dick…who the hell enjoys being impaled to death by that thing?).
Even the double standards drives me crazy nowadays! For example: when the seme is portrayed as a playboy everyone loves him and that’s a good thing because he is experienced, if it’s the uke that is playboy…well he is a slut and has to be treated as one.
Another example: when the seme has a bad personality, poor guy he has trauma and we have to justify everything that he does…if it’s the uke that has a bad personality, he deserved to be treated as s**t and be raped or tortured so the seme can fix him (and he always enjoys having his anus ripped since they never prepare for sex).
I mean there are so many cliches to tell, but I’ll stop here…am I the only one that expected something more from these stories? Or am I the fool for not liking this stuff anymore?
Real. Our writers need to step up their game especially the manwha writers with their same copy and paste "rich dude boning this 'pretty' guy who is potentially abused" LIKE I DON'T WANT NO SAME SHIT. I WANT STORY, I WANT PLOT, I WANT LOOORRE. A GOOD CHARACTER AND WORLD BUILDING. MAKE ME THIRST TO SEE 'EM FUCK BY MAKING ME INVESTED IN THEIR STORY A......

Its a horrible excuse for bad writing, sexual violence and abuse isnt needed to create a dramatic bad to good guy story (i hate the 'he will change for you' narrative in general). BL's are usually heteronormative and the thing about the bottoms suffering if they're bad people and the tops not is rooted in the misogyny extremely prevalent in korean ......

No no, you're most definitely not wrong. I started reading bl and gl both at the same time.
However I feel like both of them need better writers. Like i can literally count how many BLS or gls truly fit my type. Like I don't mind authors giving them shoujo tropes, infact i dig tropes like enemies to lovers or strangers to lover, or stories with an......

Nah, completely agree with you. I used to be able to read yaoi and shoujo all the time and when I was younger I could ignore the rape tropes and random ass misunderstanding and just pass them off as a way to make the plot more juicy but now I just get the ick.
Why does the uke need to be raped for him to fall in love with the seme? How does that ......

they just love making gay couples to look and act straight as possible, hence, why the target audience are str8 women who can relate with their rs. the over feminization of the 'bottom' and big hunky masculine 'top' makes me so MAD LOLL

Just read smthin else or read "bl" by american writers. Like webtoon, I've seen some good shit on there and its prolly cause most the bls on there written by ppl from different countries that are more openminded and are gay. I only be reading the cringey bl on here when im in the mood to make fun of smthin! REALNESS!

Tbh...its not a modern yaoi problem. Old yaois are shit like that also. The art has evolved, the world has evolved but the writing never did. As a new bl reader you tend to just read with the flow and ignore the red flags coz the author just merge it with the "pleasure". Its so foking annoying. But as you get used to reading more media and looking ......

it's a loaded question with a bit of a complex set of answers.
one of the easiest answers being, Sex Sells - fair or not, accurate portrayal or not, cohesive and sensible in-character plot or not, if it's where the money is then it's where the art is gonna go.
another answer being, media literacy is on the decline. Of course this doesn't mean tha......

you're definitely normal. Whoever likes stories that are based on romanticized rape basically the plot, are the weird ones.
I hate the fact whenever the bottom muster the courage to refuse and defend himself the author always made the bottom feel guilty and at fault, that felt like the author trying to say that the bottom is actually the one who i......

Fully agree with you and I will attempt to explain why the level of writing and storytelling has boiled down to problematic tropes and empty feeling stories:
1) when we look at the most popular stories on paid sites like lezhin, the pattern of toxic “love” stories plus good to amazing artstyle are usually the top 10, so the authors get positiv......
