The author confirmed it was not a yaoi, therefore it is not a yaoi. Simple as that. Many pieces of literature can contain some elements of other genres. However that does not mean it is the main focus. A good example is how some action or horror movies add some comedic scenes, but that doesn't mean that whole movie revolves around them.
