I use them when there are potential triggers or I feel my joke wouldn't carry well with someone who doesn't get it. I don't use them every time though.   reply

its bc some neurodivergent people like myself cant tell the tone see how "i hate you /j" and "i hate you /srs" can have completely different meanings? (/j means joking and /srs means serious) tone indicators were made because its hard for some neurodivergent people to pick up on social cues so theyre used to avoid miscommunication   2 reply

Agreed, they don't really have much practical use beyond avoiding accidental conflict (see "/s" usage on Reddit), and even then they're used way more often than necessary. As someone who has a very hard time distinguishing between people's tones in text, I think tone indicators are good for everyone. Because if you say some stupid joke that's offensive and put /j or /s behind it if someone sees it you can avoid unneeded negative interactions with them. The only one I really understood was /s for sarcastic, I know that one has been used for a while now (at least on reddit) and it can be really helpful since some people have a hard time detecting sarcasm.
