No cause otaku refers to someone who's obsessed with something. It doesnt have to be anime, can be games, computers, idols, robots, you name it. Animers even tho i have never heard of that term before but It's obvious it's exclusively about anime. So yeah, they're completely different   reply

Originally, no, the word Otaku was a bad term for someone who is basically a hermit who lives and breathes things like electronics, comics, movies, anime, etc. In Japan the word still has a bad connotation and most people will frown upon you if you describe yourself as an otaku. I know in the west now otaku usually just means a big anime fan.   reply

There's no word animers we don't use that. Otaku is a japanese word means having an obsession with certain cultures like anime, cars, fishing, manga etc. and also having poor social skills it was perceived as a negative word BUT ofc times change and with exposure globally to english speakers the term OTAKU changes and it can describe to people with......   reply

In Gintama when Hijikata gets possessed, anime and manga addicts were both called Otaku. I figure the author, Soriachi, probably knows, but don't go by me, get a real authority to answer. LOL   reply
