The bullying where I grew up was rarely severe - as in, nowhere NEAR what you see in Japanese and Korean comics - but it was still present, and enough to be painful for those who couldn't cope with it.
In my experience, it was mostly teasing/name-calling type of stuff. I wasn't ever one of the cool kids, so I definitely felt less socially accepted......
