Depends on the location and your own tolerance. I pierced my own ear lobes (3 and 4 on each ear) and didn't shed a tear, but couldn't pierce my cartilage because the needle just wouldn't pierce it (I, however, do NOT recommend you do this if you're not trained to pierce safely or a health professional - I'm a nurse).
