For me, it brought attention to the LGBT community, which I previously never really thought of. It also opened my eyes to a lot of misconceptions, discriminations, and problems there are. Of course, it should be understood that yaoi shouldn't serve as the poster for the LGBT community, nor is it entirely accurate. But it has changed my perspective. With that, I think it has to do a lot with your own personal self and how you respond to things.
Also, is a guilty pleasure for me. I ain't a kinky bean or thirsty nugget. Really. Really. Jokes aside, it goes so much deeper than porn mostly. The art and storyline combine to create masterpieces. There's so much to learn from everything. If you just open your mind, you can find it.
it also made me more aware of the LGBT community! ...however, it also made me aware of the many, many, many traps that people fall into when writing m/m relationships, and how to avoid them.
