I've been learning Japanese for over a year now and using an app called Duolingo has been really useful. Also, watching Japanese programmes really helps to learn and understand the pronunciation. Writing characters on flip cards is additionally useful for memorising the hiragana, katakana, kanji and just Japanese words in general.
