What a shame! I read yaoi manga and watch yaoi anime with my grand-daughter all the time! She's 11 and we have a blast! Most anime is cleaned up anyway and has less sex in it than your average sitcom or PG-13 movie. I also try to keep the really smutty manga to a minimum, but many of the themes and storylines in yaoi are a great way to start conversations we might never normally have. We obviously talk openly about sex and relationships this way. What better way is there to broach those subject in a light hearted way than by doing something fun together like watching anime or reading manga. Otherwise, it would just feel like a lecture to her. This way, we laugh, we cry and we talk about stuff the characters went through or did. I also get to hear her views on the themes and storylines as well as on the art and writing.
Your grandchildren are lucky xD I would die for a family remember or friend who is also into yaoi because as of now I don't know anyone in real life who likes yaoi like I do so I can't really talk about it unless it's on the internet.
I think anyone under 18 who reads yaoi should have a trusted older mentor to read with them. There is a lot of misinformation in yaoi and a lot of veiled homophobia in the older manga. Having someone to talk with, even if it is to swoon together over hot 2D guys, helps open your mind and allows you to experience new ideas.
