This made me laugh. But no their not. They didn't switch genders or plan to as far as we are aware they were just made unable to breed. Like how male humans can be "neutered" of a sort with vasectomies. Just being made unable to reproduce.
Though technically one could argue that fixed humans/animals or animals/humans unable to breed are not alive ......
