From what I can understand, the guy is feeling guilty for (possibly) ending (by rejecting?) his friendship with his (ex)best friend. He must've cherished his friendship so much that he dreamed about it, but since he really just can't return his (ex)best friend's feelings, I believe that they had to cut ties with each other (because it was awkward? not the same anymore?).

Tbh, it can either be that this is just true bromance, where the guy cherished their friendship; or the guy realized that he is also gay because it pained him to be apart from his (ex)best friend, and now he is sad that he didn't realize it sooner. :(

Are you the straight guy or the roommate? Anyway, i kinda have the same experience as the straight guy (but im not really sure if im straight ) though it was not as serious as your 'hypothetical scenario." I really treasured that friend and i want to be honest so i told that friend that i could not offer any more than friendship. We tried to save our friendship but we just drifted apart. I still care for that friend and I also had a dream wherein my friend was crying (without the i love you part). I think I feel guilty because I allowed our friendship to become what it is today. I truly regret it right now coz that person was like a sibling to me but I think that person is happier right now and lastly I think it would be bothersome if i try to bring up the past. I just wish that eventually we would be in talking terms again. Oh well.
