The characters. I’m a character driven reader, so I don’t care about genre as much as I care about what the characters are doing. They could be awful, but they need to be interesting (at least to me).   reply

I agree, Characters have to have understandable motives. Nothing is better than being able to agree or disagree with a character, it makes them seem more human. I also agree on pacing, it kills me how a lot of the things I read don't use their formats to effectively convey appropriate emotional timing or even comedic timing. But, I believe this is......   reply

For me the top thing that makes a good story is consistent characters. Like if you're going to give me a boss as bitch keep them a boss as bitch around the love interest. Don't make them go stupid and useless cause the love interest is around. Consistent and logical thought process. Sometimes nonsense is thrown into stories to make them more inter......   reply

I like stories that inherently have flaws in them. I don't think there are any perfect stories and honestly as long as the author really tried and the premise is interesting I'll probably like it. If the premise isn't interesting but its pacing is good, it's also fine. As long as it's balanced in the end, it's fine. Like a story might have terribl......   reply

I only have 3 criteria for a story to be good for me or at least enough for me to finish reading it XD Either they have all three or they only meet one. 1. Visuals- I need the art style to be pleasing if it's a visual media plus the editing and visual effects. In writing, the characters should at least have one eye candy (quite shallow but sue me).......   reply

1. Good Pacing 2. Well Written Characters (having depth, a feeling of originality, a feeling they’re actually alive, etc.): be it a psychopath, a heinous criminal, a god, or the nicest person in the world, they can be whatever as long as they are well written 3. A concrete plot: whatever the plot is, it has to 1.(make sense (oh our god turned int......   reply

Pacing. How the story got to its point needs to make sense. Step one, two, three etc etc. I don't want to be reading 3 chapters in and they've already divorced 6 times, tried to commit murder for money, and made up in chapter 1. Anytime a story is fast paced it just kills everything else. Like I'm not looking for slow burn or anything, I just wanna......   reply

Yeah I agree, I don’t mind if these characters are evil or whatever. I want them to have a motive to do something good or bad. And I want them to have a personality it okay to change their personality slowly as they grow in the story. But nothing pisses me of than their personalities completely changing because they met their love interest like.......   reply

In my opinion, direction, characters, and balance are vital to a good story - Having the direction for any story progression will ensure that everything for the most part has a purpose. Even people who write by the seat of their pants have a general sense of direction of where they want their story to go. With direction, you wind up with a story th......   reply

I think this question is kind of hard because it's so subjective imo. But for me what makes or breaks a story are the characters. They don't even have to be the best characters as long as they 1. actually do shit 2. Have personalities.
