I used to read "trash books" on the tram and one of those had hardcore smut scenes. Totally fine reading in public. Sometimes it was unbearable tho because they were horribly written and I had to hold back my laughter. What i can't do is read smutty webcomics in public. Tried that once and I'll never do it again. There's a scene in code geass where one of the girls is masturbating and I was just watching it in the very public school hallway with the audio on during lunch like it was fine.
