At this point I don’t think people are confused so much as very, deeply annoyed. The pronoun thing got turned into a political hot button issue, and because so many people get so very militant about it, there are plenty of folks who are fed up with the entire subject. And Americans get belligerent when they get annoyed, which means they’re even......   1 reply

Sometimes they use the excuse "it's confusing" to avoid conflict when they just don't wanna use they/them pronouns for an individual - people who demand to be referred to by they/them pronouns are typically very histrionic or narcissistic, chronically online individuals & some ppl don't wanna encourage that! Hope this helps :)   2 reply

Usually when someone has a problem with singular they is just about them not wanting to use neutral pronouns for ideological reasons ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I guess in some contexts there could be some initial confusion, but usually it doesn't take much thinking to understand what they/them is refering to (and if something is actually hard for you to underst......   reply

you're correct with thinking that they/them is both a singular and plural noun. unfortunately, people who insist that they/them are *only* plural pronouns are not normally confused, but bigoted and hateful. the hate being that many who refer to themselves with they/them pronouns are queer individuals who do not align with gendered pronouns. let......   reply

My first language is spanish. And even some objects are he/she geared in spanish. And while I do personally believe that genders exist so I don't really believe in non binary and I am proud of being a woman, that is just MY opinion. So out of respect for others and general human decency, I will address others as they wish. No skin off my back, so w......   reply

As a non-native English speaker who learned English at a young age, I was taught that they/them was both a singular and a plural pronoun. So, I've always referred to everything/everyone as they/them for simplicity and mainly because I hated using he/she or him/her. Seeing so many people insist that they/them is only plural is making me so confused.
