Irl a lot of artist contracted TB and it was thought to be something that aided artists in creation. While we understand more about tb, the effects of how it was viewed still persists today.
A lot of writers will use it as a turning point for characters. A reason to change, to make amends, etc. This usually involves ignoring the contagious aspects of it, so they can give them a "romantic" take on sickness.
Doesn't help that a lot of the literary/artistic aspects came out during Romanticism Age
