: He is still controlling her, because he's unable to let go. He's in too much denial. The moment he's about to understand the impact of his actions and his own freaking emotions, he goes back to zero again and again. I get that he's traumatized but this once again doesn't give him a pass at dragging Annette to hell with him. How can a man so selfless towards his country be so selfish towards Annette? I still can't get over the part that he used to not see her as a human capable of hurt and love, but as a reflection of the idealized version his ego created. Yes, he's a complex character and while he deserves rest, he certainly doesn't deserve Annette. But i guess life isn't fair and a realistic depiction of it isn't going to be fair either. I love how in the novel, she never fully heals nor fully forgets and accepts what Heiner did to her and what she went through when the reality of the world came crushing down.
