Zankoku Na Kami Ga Shihai Suru
Holy shit, this was a trip. I don't think I have seen a series that has tackled sexual assault to this extent, in addition to juggling other similarly dark topics. Like the tags suggest, it is tragic, but there is a sort of 'light at the end of the tunnel', as well as vindication. The ending wasn’t for me, but it could have been much worse. Reading this felt like walking into a marsh. When you step in, you don’t know what you’re getting into until you fall down into the mud. Then, you kind of trudge through it, feeling awful, until you finally leave, disgusted but having the experience be a blur. Many of the characters were emotionally fleshed out, even the main antagonist (although still awful). If anything else, I don't think this manga will leave my head anytime soon. The series is quite vivid, which I usually don't see in the manhwas I read. It's clear that the author put work into the piece, and despite some grievances I have with it, this was certainly an experience. 8.4/10, Points docked for some questionable stuff, but I would still recommend a read. — Holy shit, this was a trip. Well, I can say it’s not for everyone. Explicit sexual assault, as well as an unsatisfying conclusion, etc… There is a 'light at the end of the tunnel', at least, up to you if your cup of tea. Recommend: psychological story that makes you want to tear your hair out — Its strength lies on how it explores topics of sexual assault. It serves to address the question: why do mothers not report their husbands who have relationships with their children? Relationships within the family are complex. It is tagged ‘Psychological’ for a reason. I personally found the “shounen-ai” aspect to be a weakness of the series, but it certainly has its strengths as well. 29 05,2021
Oni to Tengoku Kyuu
Continuation of that one BL where the pair does sexual acts as a way of revealing the old man's psychological trauma. Sequel is surprisingly heartwarming. They've settled down a bit. Seems like there's still some underlying problems, but I haven't seem much of it yet. At this point we're still seeing them in love, which is nice.
Megami Ibunroku - Persona
It’s good! I read this blind (haven’t actually played the game) but I found it pretty compelling—characters are given their moments and even Naoya gets his own character arc. I will say that the presence of a few characters are minimized compared to the game (Still haven’t played the game, but have watched gameplay of it online lol) and the Snow Queen arc is massively shortened compared to what’s in the game, but it’s been touted by fans as a good adaptation of the game, and I have to agree. It’s a bit hard to read (I have to pause sometimes to see how characters move from one panel to the next), but I found I didn’t mind it as I got more invested in the story.
Oshi no Ko
I've read part of this manga on another website, at some point. I have no idea where I left off.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Towa ni Shinu Made (Doujinshi)
Think I might've read this a few years back. A "What-if" Jonathan was a vampire instead of Dio dj. Concept was interesting and art was nice.
VR Ojisan no Hatsukoi
Escapism, living for someone else, first and last loves, a relationship that doesn’t fit boundaries. Understanding and cherishing death, making the best out of the little moments left. It’s never too late to live again. It’s not too late to love. Gender identity and sexuality transcended through an online medium. Death is the end, but it also marks a new beginning.
Usagi no Mori
Interesting. Childhood friends get together, even though the love's unrequited. Pushing and prodding from the one with unrequited feelings leads into...something else, pertaining to the other guy---psychological trauma, Oedipus Complex-esque. It's a strange back-and-forth; things progress, but their feelings remain about the same. Feels like we're watching two sides, waiting for the moment where one of them collapses into the other. I liked the side dude. He reminds me of another character, but he's still interesting. --- Notes for myself below. - No sexual urges. First-glance, Problematic asexuality trope => Oedipus Problem(?) => Sex Repression/Repulsion
Double
It’s quite interesting. Very much an emotionally-based story, exploring acting and theater through the lenses of several characters, but namely Yuujin, whose natural affinity for the stage is potent, to the effect of it seeming to consume everything around it. Their lives intermingle in convoluted ways; they feel human in the way they struggle and live. I find it hard to understand at times, at least as a casual reader. Sometimes, I wonder: “Huh, that’s interesting,” not necessarily understanding what it all means. I may be able to get a better insight with rereading, but I wanted to note that, nonetheless, because this isn’t really an easy read. Still, I got a general gist of what’s going on. I’m liking it. It’s got complex, psychologically-bound conflicts amidst the characters, and I’m a big fan of that kind of stuff (also Author’s works in general—her BL stuff is great). Certainly a series that sticks in your head.
Utsukushii Koto (INUI Nao)
I *really* liked this one. It's a crossdressing scenario between two dudes, Matsuoka (MC) and Hirosue (ML), that ends up invoking the worst out of two people. The MC is a fool for leading the ML on for so long, too "kind" to shut him down. He is also a fool for expecting the man to overlook appearances, to overlook the lie that was told. But then the ML is similarly foolish. Beyond the point of cut-off, he prolongs the wounds they've inflicted onto each other, wielding the MC's feelings like a bullet, to shoot at any moment's notice. Towards the MC, he is callous, trampling onto his feelings. And yet, he acts contradictory---distant to his girlfriend, an underlying unhappiness. He remains harboring feelings for his "lady." You take a look at these two and see how deeply their love has been imprinted onto each other. They fell for each other because of the other's display of kindness, but because it was construed over a lie, they end up questioning the other's feelings, they want to run away from their own, both of theirs stubbornly remaining despite the pain it's caused for them. It's a love story where they fall in love quickly, but that's only one half of the equation. Beyond that, it's the navigation of ruminated feelings, wanting to move on but finding that they can't. It's a good case study that highlights how irrational love can be. I think it's realistically rendered, with of course still being dramatic and frustrating. But I love that in a series. I loved that they both groveled for the other person. Also the first time I've really seen an MC significantly change appearance between novels. Perhaps one of the few times in BL where I see a female character with a compelling relationship with both male characters, and yet is still treated as a likeable character (the two male characters come out as worse, in fact). Wished the ending was more conclusive, though? Side note: I appreciate how kindly they treated the ladies in this equation, because none of that hot mess was their fault. The treatment of the female character reminds me of Faded First Love. The way these two (unfortunately?) hold onto each other reminds me a little of the bit I've read of Usagi no Mori.
