The Rib of Adam (Jinmi)
What did I just read… This was only four chapters, but god, it felt like a journey. The author depicted body horror relatively…. well? I’m kind of loss on how the biology works for his side lady holes. Anyway, I’m getting the feeling there’s some big philosophical takeaway from this. Maybe what happened to the MC was retribution? Did he truly deserve that? We’ll never know. All I can say is, yes, this was a “good shock manhwa.” Strange read.
Act Out!
This was short, yet very good read! The MC’s beautiful figure skating was definitely the highlight of this manga. Other than that, this was a special experience in that the story briefly touched on mental health. Definitely reminded me of Yuri on Ice with the whole Russian instructor deuteragonist lmao. I liked the development me of their relationship even if it wasn’t romantic. Vasil’s ballet history was a nice touch. Both ballet and figure skating tend to be visually appealing sports. Loved the art and the general message of the story. “Finding yourself.” Just wish this was longer.
Famous Restaurant
20 omg this is so interesting. it’s not only gore; this has a psychological aspect to it, too. the mc just wnts to be successful, but society has been cruel to him. everyone on social media seems to be doing better thn him, so much so that he has resolved himself to keep using his special seasoning that will keep earning him money and power. pretty telling of the world, and the plot feels unique! a nice twist on typical horror
Cure Blood
This was so short, yet extremely compelling. It captured the pain and the loneliness that comes with longevity and at the same time the leads’ love for each other. The execution and art were beautiful. I think what made this manga stand out to me was the progression of time. You see the people around the MC grow older (i.e. hia family, coworkers, even the ML) while the MC stays looking young. The setting pf how he turned into a vampire wasn’t fully developed, but I think this story didn’t need that. It was more about the tragedy of longevity. Loved this!
Curtain's up, I'm off
Theater acting in a high school setting. I liked the themes of youth, friendship, yada, yada. it just felt a little cliché and generic. the characters aren’t particularly unique, and they’re lacking. practically only three characters are memorable. aside from the acting aspect, you could treat this like any other shounen manga. wow, they’re selected to go to nationals in the end…. yipee ig? had promise, but the execution ultimately underwhelmed me.
Sleeping Dead
frickin’ masterpiece. i loved how the themes played around with morals. they even touched on bullying. the storytelling is so masterful— the way emotions are expressed without explicitly saying them outright through the composition of the panels and the subtleties in the art
The Onee-sama and the Giant
17 this is rly good! i like the dark tone. the art is excellent and gore-y. the story isn’t so much like AOT as it is a twisted isekai manga. i didn’t think there would be mecha in here as well…
Zombie Fight
63 this is actually so freaking good?? it tugs on the heart strings. plus the plot is very unique and well-structured. touches on the human psyche.
Sabishisugite Lesbian Fuzoku Ni Ikimashita Report
This isn’t just a good depiction of the author’s lesbianism but also one of mental illness. the way the mangaka iterates their feelings is very direct and compelling. the autobiographical and personal style makes the initially difficult topics the manga broaches so realistic and relatable. me personally i heavily identity with the mangaka’s experience with gender like wth?? why does this put into words so much of the feelings i’ve had for a majority of my life. “It wasn’t like I wanted to be a boy, more like I hated the idea of belonging to a gender. That somehow before I was ‘me,’ I was a ‘woman.’ Like I was scared of being overly defined by those expectations…” I’m glad the author recovered in her own way, finding that “sweet nectar.”
