Butterfly Night

Complete | kayono | 2000 released

Absolutely disgusting. Hey, it's okay when a guy rapes you, as long as he ends up being hot! That aside, the plot is rushed and ridiculous. Then I learned that she ripped off another mangaka's art directly. This chick does not have a lot going for her.

Seishun Otome Banchou!

Complete | seino shizuru | 2013 released

Mostly confused by the fact that she's only ugly when she's making a weird face. Is her normal face supposed to be ugly? I don't get it. Is there something I'm missing? She looks just like the other girls. That aside, I like her personality, and I'm eager to keep reading this. I'm only on chapter two at the moment, though. More notes added later. ETA: Finsihed chapter nine, looking forward to more. The manga isn't without flaws, and I don't like how much everyone gets away with, being so cruel to Mihane. I really want Touma to stand up for her already. I know she's tough and doesn't need to be protected, but us tough girls need someone to stand up for us, too. Maybe I'm taking this a little too personally. XD Looking forward to more, regardless of my issues with it. ETA 2: Wait, why does it say it's complete now? It can't be! I'll cry! I hope there's more of these characters. I'm happy with how it turned out in the end, and this is a very unusual manga. I sure wish I could find more stories where the female lead is unattractive or overweight and stays that way through the whole story. I don't typically like shoujo, but I really loved this.

Uchuu o Kakeru Yodaka

Complete | KAWABATA Shiki | 2000 released

I won't know for sure how to feel until it's finished, but if it keeps going in the right direction, this could be a pretty fantastic manga. So many of these things require the girl to lose weight and be skinny and all that, but it's nice to see the guy loving her for who she is, regardless of what she looks like. He doesn't treat her as ugly and pitiable, and you don't see that often in manga. I just wish she'd stay like that. I feel really bad for the girl who stole her body, even though she's sort of mean and manipulative. She had a really awful life up to that point, after all.

Really short, but sweet for the length.

Eh? What? Five pages, guy shows up, calls her ugly, says they should date. I assume there was supposed to be more, but it hasn't been updated in over a year, so...

08:05 no Hengao-san

Complete | Kawabata Shiki | 2000 released

Short, inoffensive. It irks me that they couldn't just be friends with each other, but whatever. I get that people like cutesy romantic origins. I guess it just isn't for me.

The Demon Ororon

Complete | hakase mizuki | 1999 released

I really loved Demon Flower, which has a bittersweet ending itself, and I know this mangaka's style is to kill everyone as much as possible, especially sweet and innocent characters that stumble into the frame (I've never read a shoujo manga with so much graphic murder and torture of children), but the ending petered out so oddly. I've owned all four manga since they came out when I was in high school, but I only now read it on here, and I have to wonder if she'd meant to continue this but then it didn't work out, because even compared to her other abrupt endings, this was like she walked off a cliff mid-sentence. Plus, I hate it so much when a character is like, "You're all I care about! I don't have anyone else!" when friends of theirs are literally dying all around them to protect them. Seriously, bitch? You have no one else? The ending was a miss for me. It could have been more powerful, but in the confusion it just fell flat. 2.5 stars overall. EDIT: Apparently there's a follow up out there that she wrote in 2007. I had, in my delirious, sleep-deprived state, thought it was a continuation for Demon Flowers, though I'm not sure how that would have worked, and I got super excited. Now I'm a little sad, but I'm hoping it gets translated eventually, because this ending is so random. We need a follow up.

Love Com Two

Complete | nakahara aya | 2000 released

I only read the last two thoroughly, chapter 3 and 3.5. I'm not a huge fan of typical shoujo romance, and after I skimmed the first few chapters, I figured it didn't have anything that would really change my feelings. I read the last two because of the unusual lead female characters. I wish it could have been more focused on women like that. The fat girl story was what brought me here, and though it ended happily enough, I don't know how I feel about how much he hated his girlfriend's appearance, like in the end he was just tolerating her. I did like that she was legitimately fat, though. Another manga I started reading is about a fat girl who is drawn exactly like all of the other girls in size, but somehow she's supposed to be overweight. Anyway, I can tell the other stuff isn't for me, but the last two stories weren't too bad. Chapter 3 had a good message, too, and I'm so glad she finally chased after her dream and broke out of her rigid sense of duty.

Amaama-kun No Okashi Na Yuuwaku

Ongoing | tokino mitsuru | 2016 released

I feel like this author wanted to write a story about a fat girl, but she didn't actually want to DRAW a fat girl. I mean, look at this chick. Her morbid obesity is shocking. x_x Seriously, she doesn't even look slightly pudgy compared to the other characters. It's like we're supposed to use our imaginations. But whatever. If you say everyone sees her as fat, fine. 2.5 stars for now, two chapters in, because I don't like the fact that I have to worry about her eventually getting "thin." I hate stories where he finally loves her for who she is, then she loses weight anyway. Sad that like only .0000000000000000001% of manga has a lead female who isn't conventionally attractive, and of those, like .0000000000000000001% have a strong storyline and a girl who stays the way she is and still deserves love and happiness.

Edo Karuta

Complete | ame arare | 2009 released

Only read the first story. It was sweet enough, even though I hate that she randomly had to get skinny in the last two pages. But at least he loved her before and was even concerned about her weight loss. I wish he'd beat the crap out of all of the people who mocked her, though.
