Sensei no Kenkyu

Complete | Maruguruto matsushita | 2019 released

Can't say I love this. It's not the best translation, but I can tell the dialogue wouldn't be amazing anyway. It's just disjointed, rushed, and full of possessive semes with an idiotically polite uke. Like, "No, no, don't rape me! ...Oh, okay, thanks for the cocoa!" Give me a break, guy. There's no chemistry between the main pair, and there's no character development, so it's just this weird, flat story with no real intrigue. Maybe something will change as it goes, but I doubt it. On top of that, the art is pretty shitty, so yeah, I'm not here for it.

Usagi no Mori

Ongoing | Enjo | 2018 released

Everybody wants to fuck this poor asexual kid. This story has me torn. I can make a better decision once it's finished, but right now it's hard to say. I don't like how pushy the seme can be, though they do discuss it in ways that other BL rarely does. This story is actually about trauma. Regardless of sexual experiences or desires, the character isn't sexually attracted to people, which makes him asexual. Asexual people can still love and desire sex. I know, because I'm asexual with a high sex drive. I enjoy it and seek it out, but I don't feel sexual attraction to people. The assault part could have been way worse for yaoi. I don't know, I have a lot of mixed feelings. The art is so gorgeous, and I do like elements of this. It's unique and focuses on something very rare--the sexual abuse of a mother to a son. It seems like she's never actually touched him, but all of the stuff she does to him is definitely sexual abuse. It's so creepy. Poor baby. Just the first two volumes out now, but hopefully the third will come soon.

Furimuite Yukino-chan!

Complete | Machi Yayoi , Niko Yuki | 2019 released

Aw, a very sweet little story. I'm really happy about the secondary couple, too. I was hoping from the start, as I'm sure many others were. But I almost feel like this needs a sequel to expand more on everything. Regardless, I enjoy that it doesn't do what her other work does with the misunderstandings and all that crap. It was... a little like that, but not really. It worked well enough for me. Not a perfect manga, but sweet and light with a happy ending all around.

Keep Moaning, I'm Watching You

Ongoing | Esu Shiromiya | 2000 released

Hesitantly giving it a four for now. Just the one chapter, so I don't know how to gauge it. I do love innocent love between little kids, like before it's even sexual, just the cute little crushes before they grow up and hormones set in. I wish there were more stories like it. I feel like it's either only little snippets, or it ends in something sad. Or worse, they think their friend is a girl and are shocked to find it was a guy later. x_x But yeah, the guys are pretty. I guess we'll see how it goes. EDIT: Yeaaaaah not sure this is for me. The fetish is one thing, but the fact that the other guy is like, oh, well, what if I still want to date you even though you had me raped? I can't with the yaoi rape forgiveness.

SMILE

Complete | Penguin Frontier | 2000 released

Aww, what a beautiful, touching story. I'm so glad they were both able to break through their emotional barriers. I'm surprised so many people consider this a sad ending. I think it's very happy and very hopeful. Facing that pain, they could have given up, but they persevered. What happens after that is ambiguous in some ways, but we do know for sure that they're happy, and someday Ren gets his smile back. The bullying and teacher reactions and such were hard to sit through, and I hate that those shits got away with it. But a lot of awful people get away with awful things, and smaller towns can still be very homophobic and xenophobic (hence how they mocked Wayne for being a foreigner). I'm relieved it didn't fall to pieces when everyone kept calling it "realistic." Sometimes that's code for "they die or break up." Which is really annoying, because it might be realistic on some level, but it's not like it's the standard. EDIT: Holy crap, that additional information. This almost had a brutal ending. O_O Glad they changed it, honestly. It would have been powerful, but it would have been so miserable. Similar to a beautiful Korean short film about homophobia and bullying, only it goes through with the sad ending. :(

The Perfect Relationship

Complete | Akkang, Sam | 2017 released

Pretty sad, fucked up story. Definitely depressing with no real relief. I feel so bad for that high school student, though I'm glad he was given comfort and held and such, allowed to cry. I hope that after this, he and the other guy, the main dude's boyfriend, both have happier lives. Maybe he'll help the high schooler get out of his situation. Maybe when he's older, they'll date, and they can both feel like they accomplished things they thought they wouldn't. Either way, definitely a downer, but most of the characters weren't likable enough for it to really sting. His son, though. Ugh, it was so cruel. Right into the end, just how kind and trusting he was. Not something I'd reread, but not awful. Just a bummer.

Our Gamble in Bed

Ongoing | Fujimine Shiki | 2000 released

Very pretty art, and I like the idea of school rivals coming together later. As of two chapters, though, they've barely touched on their past, so I'm guessing that won't be a heavy feature. It's nothing amazing, but the seme is hot, and I think he loves the uke already, so that's sweet.

Hitomazu wa Horyuu

Ongoing | 茶渋たむ,Tam chashibu | 2019 released

Not sure so far, but I do like how he speaks so candidly like that, basically spelling it out for the other guy. I enjoy this dynamic, so here's hoping the rest is good.

Litchi Hikari Club

Complete | furuya usamaru | 2006 released

What the fuck... That was so freaking weird and random, but mostly it was just too quick and abrupt to leave any impact. All of the characters were evil, stupid, or both. What was with the chick, though? Was she supposed to be mentally challenged? That's the only thing I can assume based on the things she said and choices she made, but I can't tell if it was intentional or not. Anyway, a gross and lame story about megalomania and psychosis. I get what it was going for in a way, but it was just generally so bad and rushed with nothing but misery, and the only one left is a total moron. I'm glad all of the boys died, though, since they were all killers and/or rapists. Touching a passed out girl's boob is apparently all some people need to feel life is fulfilling.

Mitto mo Nai Koi

Complete | Moriyo | 2015 released

It might be the translation in part, but this manga was just a total mess. It was all over the place and abrupt, full of a toxic relationship that couldn't be fixed by any means, let alone the minor ones the uke puts into play. But whatever. The masochist story was also messy but it was ultimately quite cute. If it hadn't been so all over the place, I think I would have really liked it. The guy being so concerned and loving over his guy while also being a sexual sadist was great. He was so sweet and loving, but totally kinky. It's nice that they work for each other like that. It's clear this mangaka has some pretty overt fetishes, especially with pain during sex. But I just couldn't get past the crazy plot and kind of confusing story. Again, I think that was mostly the translation, but I can tell things wouldn't have changed all that much if it were polished up.
