Deichuu no Hasu

Complete | Tamekou | 2014 released

This is the only kind of incest I can read--the type that acknowledges how sick it is and approaching it with that twisted, psychological perspective. When it's treated as an everyday thing in a story, it weirds me out. (To each their own, of course! It's fiction. Just not my thing.) The story was interesting and well done, and I just love her art. But I'm not sure I buy the twist. The fact that people said there was a twist at all clued me into what it probably was, so I read the story with the assumption that... well, no spoilers if you can't guess. Anyway, I was right, and I feel like it was kind of reaching compared to the other complex stuff. I was a little disappointed that it tried to be extra twisted when it was one of the few stories where a rape victim flat out accuses their attacker of rape. It's like no one wants to use that word in stories, and half the time the victim ends up comforting the attacker. But that's yaoiland for you, I guess. Regardless, it was definitely a creepy, twisted, sad, and interesting read. I enjoyed it, even if the twist was kinda meh for me. It's a messed up story, and it *knows* it's messed up. The intention is never to paint any of this as normal or all right. (The violence, manipulation, and games, I mean.) So yeah, 4.5 stars.

Junjou Shounen

Complete | Sunako | 2015 released

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I really can't stand when omegaverse stuff uses female terms for male omegas. "Wife" and "mother" and "mom" just sound weird, but the issue I have is that whole "being penetrated makes you a woman" bs that ties misogyny and homophobia together. I mean, trans men who give birth don't refer to themselves as mothers. It just irks me. Plus his "mom" had that super dorky mom haircut that you see, making it really hard for me to remember he was a dude. That aside, the fact that the alpha supremacist father so easily flips around like that made me roll my eyes a little. There were things here and there that irked me, and I debated on my rating of this one. But ultimately, it was an interesting story with a sweet pair (though with the risk of him being bitten and claimed by someone else, why not just get it done with?), and even with its flaws, it was better than a lot of the stuff that happens in many omegaverse stories. At least this one doesn't treat rape like it's a firm handshake. So four stars it is.

Hanamachi Monogatari - Hatsuzakura Mau, Yoru No Shitone

Complete | vivid color,samamiya akaza | 2012 released

The art is pretty, so typically I would be slightly forgiving of some obnoxious but typical yaoi tropes. But this doesn't even have to do with the pathetic uke. What about the other prostitutes? What happened to the one that was flipping out and begging them to stop? Did he get executed? I couldn't figure out what was going on at the end of that scene. But the fact that all of these people had been mistreated and tormented, there's no forgiving that. I don't care if this rape to love BS ended in the seme being sweet to the uke. What the hell. The uke isn't the only victim that matters. Super grossed out right now. I always hate how rape and abuse are okay as long as there's twoo wuv at the end, but it doesn't usually branch out to other people who never get their own happy ending. I really liked a lot of the art, and if they'd gone the dark route and really explored how awful this place was, I would have liked it. Instead, all is forgiven because the seme had a sad childhood. Boohoo. All of these people you're raping and forcing into prostitution aren't having a grand time either, and they aren't doing that crap to others.

Rakka

Complete | Akabeko | 2000 released

This mangaka really has a thing for stuck up ukes being jerks then paying the price for it. But this is interesting regardless. I have mixed feelings, but I'm intrigued. I don't know if this story is gonna continue, or if this is a collection of different stories, but I'd like to see where he can go from here. ETA: So I just finished chapter five, and this gets weirder and weirder. I don't get why everyone seems to love the second couple. The whole thing is just weird and creepy. The enema, and how he's like, "You look pregnant. Let's deliver the baby!" Like wtf, I laughed but I was disturbed. And then he turned him gay by screwing him? You can't turn people gay. This isn't like being a vampire, except instead of biting to turn someone, you stick your dick in their ass. I did, however, like the third couple, despite some of its own creepy parallels. I love that age difference. And it's nice to see two lonely people comfort one another. I could have done without the weird moment where he tells the guy he sees him like his father, to which the man responds by jumping his bones. But other than that, it's cute and sweet. So far I still like her omegaverse story more, though I'm so worried about how that ones gonna end up. Plus it takes forever to update. So here I am.

Youchina Koi O Dou Shiyou

Complete | kurenai | 2016 released

Aw, very sweet. Sad and heartwarming, though there are things I wish it would have explored more. Still, I liked it, and I love hurt/comfort sort of stories. I want more of them where the seme is protective and loving. Personally, I'd like a more passionate and expressive seme early on, but all the same. I give it 4.5 for the first six chapters. If more come out, that might change.

Mede Shireru Yoru No Junjou

Complete | suzuki ami,Itsuki Kaname | 2007 released

I understand why so many people are saying they felt unsatisfied with this manga. There's definitely something annoying about it. I feel like it would have been better if Kichou hadn't been so annoying and wishy washy all the time. At first, it made sense that he was doing things to protect Kagerou, but then he would lure him in and lead him on, then act like a dick, and all of it was supposedly because he loved him, but that didn't really add up overall. I hate how cocky and smug he was all the time. And of course the mildly rapey sex, all with that creepy smirk. So yeah, I'm annoyed, too. I wanted to really see Kichou suffer at some point and truly regret the way he handled things. I feel like I would have preferred an ending with Iwasaki getting what he wanted. But ultiimately, I am glad they have a happy ending. If I take out all the parts that annoy me, I really do like the concept of the story. Two boys, raised in a brothel, and their forbidden love--it was a recipe for a really good manga, and it could have been so much better. But it wasn't awful, and the translation was good. The art had weird moments but it was mostly rather beautiful. So 3.5 or so stars.

Red Theatre

Complete | OGAWA Chise | 2000 released

Wow, this is definitely twisted. What a messed up relationship. But I enjoyed the manga, and I really liked the parallels to the fairytale, The Red Shoes. It's a less literal approach to it, though it still maintains that concept of never being able to take the shoes off. In the fairytale, a huntsman has to cut off her feet to save her life, so I guess be happy that wasn't you, Yuriy. Lol Seriously, though, a lot of creepy sexism goes into shoe designs, if you dig into the history and concept. They look pretty on your legs, but they aren't good for you. I've had jobs where I was forced to wear heels, and it's not great. Anyway, Adam, you fucking sociopath. It started out seeming like Yuriy was the one in charge, arogant and confident sort, but that wasn't the case at all. The way Adam smiles all passive and calm, like nothing is happening, wtf. It's his own fault things go the way that they do, but I honestly feel like Adam wasn't punished enough for what he did. The ending came so quickly. I get that it was something major for what he likes to do, but I feel like Yuriy should have been killed. He treated him awfully and he doesn't deserve to have him in the end. That would have really crushed his spirit, and he deserves that. At any rate, the happily ever after doesn't seem fitting to the story, but it's sweet enough. The whole tale is pretty creepy and disturbing, though. Manipulative love to the most unhealthy degree. Also, did I miss something? What was the secret? That Yuriy whored himself out? I wasn't clear on that. I did like the history with the uncle and his rival, though. That was a nice little addition. I love when enemies turn out to have been involved, especially when there's still sexual tension there.

MADK

Complete | Ryo Sumiyoshi | 2000 released

Mixed feelings so far, as this is a weird freaking manga. Oddly gets LESS weird when the hell brothel comes in. But I like the art, even when it's strange. I'm intrigued, at any rate. I hope it doesn't disappoint. Four chapters isn't enough to be sure, but I hope that it's long enough to satisfy what it's set up. Also, lol at whoever tagged this as "slice of life."

Paraphrase

Golly, mister! You didn't have to have a bunch of guys gang rape me to show you liked me! Next time, just ask me out! Tee hee!

Katsubou Animajemera

Ongoing | AION Kiu | 2019 released

Feels a liiiiittle convenient that he's seemingly run into the guy he raped and had consensual sex with him. But hey, it's yaoiland, so whatever. I was mostly intrigued because it's really rare in omegaverse to have the alpha feel guilty for raping an omega. I would love to see that played out more, like genuine trauma from his own actions. I'm guessing this will mostly be smut, which bums me out since I like more story, and the smut so far didn't do much for me. But it's not a bad manga as of chapter one. I guess we'll see how it unfolds. CHAP 2: Still interesting, and the sex as therapy for his past trauma is nice. I really like seeing someone truly damaged by the awful thing they did, specifically rape. You just never see that explored, and it's even rare to see a rapist in a BL even acknowledge that he is one. So I do like that, if nothing else. I wanna see what's going on with that other omega at the brothel, though. I hope he gets a spin off.
