Meikon

Complete | Maeda Sakae,Fujikawa Ruri | 2010 released

Don't you just hate it when your grandpa binds your soul with a doll in a spiritual marriage? Don't worry, though. This is Yaoi-land. Anything goes. This story is kind of disjointed and all over the place. It isn't the worst thing I've ever read, but the plot points were very choppy, and the reveals were formulaic. The art was okay, but the plot itself was kind of dull and rushed. I may have liked it a tiny bit more if it weren't for the weird rape-to-love elements, but I dunno. Two and a half stars, but it won't let me do halves.

Cha-k-ra

Ongoing | Oumi Shinano | 2006 released

I'm interested so far, so I hope it starts to update regularly. And I hope it doesn't have a tragic ending or something, ugh.

Demon Diary

Complete | Lee Yun Hee | 2000 released

I was eagerly buying these up back in the day, as they were being released. Nostalgia! I miss the thrill of walking into the bookstore to see what was new, leaving with an armful of manga. Nothing since has ever quite been like that feeling. But I can't give it the full five stars, just because it always bothered me that she had to change writers, and the story obviously took a completely different turn than what had been planned. I feel like it was supposed to be way more shounen ai, too, but the new writer took it in a more lighthearted direction. It's a shame, but I still have all of the volumes from those years ago, and it is something I look back on fondly.

Shirayukihime (ito Junji)

Complete | ito junji | 2014 released

Wow, that mirror sure likes to stir shit up. I've always hated how we cling to that "fairest of them all" crap with this story, though. Growing up, most of us think "fair" means "beautiful" because of how it's used. Of course, there are plenty of cultures that still think pale skin is the most beautiful. It'd be really cool if we could start weeding that BS out of society. Maybe start with kid stories? Not that this particular take on it is for children, lol.

The Holy Grail of Eris

Ongoing | Kujira tokiwa,Momoyama hinase | 2019 released

Huh. I think I misinterpreted some comments, because the description pretty much sums it up. Criminal, execution... I mean, I guess we'll see what happens? I'm not really one for this kind of story, but I'll stick around and see.

Yagiza no Yuujin

Complete | otsuichi,miyokawa masaru | 2000 released

Wow. This was really beautiful and sad, and I loved it. I really love a focus on male/male friendship, too. It's so rare to see. Even with the lingering hints of feelings one of them had for the girl, that was never the focus, so it didn't take away from the power of the story. The cat stuff--NO. Fucking hell. I hated it so much. I wish I could erase that from my mind. I know it's only pretend, but it was so drawn out and awful, and one of my cats looks like that cat, so even worse. But other than that, this was a really good manga. I wish that scene would exit my brain, but I'm glad I read the story. I do wish that there'd been more emphasis on the healing of the survivors, especially someone who's been so brutally bullied and mistreated for so long, but at least he said that sweet thing at the end about how he feels hopeful being with the other boy. Very sad but a very good story.

His Lake

Complete | Densen | 2000 released

Eh? So was he the evil magician or whatever the whole time? What was with the horns? Or was it implying that he'd turned evil in his grief? Very short and rushed, like everyone is saying, but at least it was too brief and shallow to make me cry, so hey!

Madou no Keifu

Ongoing | satou sakura,inuzuka hiro | 2019 released

Ooh, I really like this so far! I hope it updates soon! I just love platonic relationships that are built on deep love and respect. (I mean, I assume, since he's a little boy.) It's so rare to not see a female love interest shoved in to stuff like this. Not everything is about romance.

The Story of The Princess and The Little Mermaid

Complete | murasakino | 2000 released

Well that was a bummer. Too short to really suck you in, but the last line was still kind of a gut punch.

My Childhood Friend Was a God

Complete | Ruru (menten watagashi) | 2019 released

Definitely heartbreaking but not hopeless. He's always with him, and one day he'll die too, and maybe they'll be together. There must be a special ending for a person made exclusively for that god, so I imagine they'll be with each other after death. It definitely made me cry, though. Loving someone who you know will be gone soon is a painful thing. The comments made it sound like the story was way more dark and depressing than it was, though. It was sad and hurt, but I think eventually he'll go on to have a normal life and know that his best friend and first love is watching out for him.
