Nii-chan (harada)

Complete | Harada | 2013 released

I really appreciate how Harada handles evil characters. She sets her work apart from yaoi where these things happen, but the author treats them as cute or part of romance. This is how shota, rape, abuse, etc. SHOULD be written--as the evil, fucked up things that they are. Her stories can be so subtly twisted, and if you took out the pedo aspect, that would have been the case here. It was too short, though. I'd like to see more about the characters. Either way, I love Harada for her beautiful art, dark and complex stories, and intense character emotion. But I especially love her for making messed up things happen and not pretending that they could ever be forgiven. ETA: Oh yay, it is continued! Glad that it was mistakenly labeled as finished. Just as screwed up as ever. I like the new girl. I hope something interesting happens with her. Maybe she's as fucked up as the rest of them. This is definitely the first time I've ever read a story about a young man who's in love with a pedophile. Count on Harada to make that work.

Kiwa (Kaori Monchi)

Complete | Kaori Monchi | 2000 released

I really liked this. I'm glad that the father never fully stooped to his unhealthy desires, even though he did feel his kid up a little, which is... not great. But these things usually go much farther in Yaoiland. I like that this is pretty clearly meant to be screwed up, right up to the pondering at the end. It isn't passed off as cute or fluffy. I wish I could read more about that character, especially if he started dealing with his issues, rather than the story turning into full on incest. But this was a good oneshot.

Zanuff the Butcher

Complete | Jouyama Yui | 2000 released

Holy crap, I started reading it because I thought it was funny that the art was all cutesy but it was listed as horror. I absolutely did not expect to be ugly-crying by the end. So sad! And touching. Twisted, for sure, but heart-wrenching. I'm glad I read it. Not what I thought it would be at all.

Ore, higaisha

Ongoing | Kimura Hidesato | 2000 released

"I'm too scared to ask, but I think maybe Shinobu is gay." ... .... .......... What makes you say that, guy who currently has the dude's dick up his ass??? This is the definition of what I hate in yaoi. For whatever reason, the uke is always magically worried about the seme or starts to find him attractive in the middle of rape, and it's like this weird romance. It's so gross. I'm intrigued by the strangulation fetish, so I checked this out, hoping it would be more interesting than your typical rape to love bullshit. It isn't. It just adds choking. Take the choking out and it's the same as a million other stories. I understand that Japanese culture encourages meekness, but I feel like the lengths ukes go to help others in these things is kinda pushing it. This story would have been cute if they'd started as consensual fuck buddies with no feelings between them, but because the guy just jumps the other guy, it's gross. Anyway, they were all supposed to be kinky, kinda twisted stories, but they came across as average stories with weird shit shoved in there. I know a lot of people are confused by the second story, but I kinda liked it. I wish it were a lot longer. You don't see a lot of stuff focusing on MPD, and when it is, it portrays the person as dangerous or something. This wasn't super accurate, but it was better than a lot of stuff out there. I also liked the fourth story. It was very sad, but I like that moment of realization, how he coped with the trauma and the implications of all the times he's seen monsters. The third story, uh... I'm not sure how to feel going into a manga that starts off talking about bloody diarrhea. Not my thing, but there are people out there who hate how yaoi guys don't poop, or at least bitch about it. So here ya go! Also, why is there a tragedy tag? Am I missing something? So far, no one has died.
